Forestry Professional's Series: Iknmatimkewe’l Nipuktuk - Gifts from the Forest

The Forestry Professional's Series is part of our MCFC Summer Webinar series on ecologically-based forest management and forest stewardship. In this series, we share the valuable insight and practical knowledge of forestry practitioners, academics and professionals on sustainable forest management and take a deeper dive into these how these forestry practices can be applied.

Cheyenne is the Agriculture Cooperative Development Coordinator with Mi’kmawey Forestry at The Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq. She is a member of Sipekne’katik First Nation and was born and raised in Enfield, N.S. where she grew up as an only child filling her time by playing with the catfish and frogs from the pond on her property and exploring the wilderness around her home. After earning her Esthetics diploma in 2010, she became increasingly interested in holistic medicine which motivated her to start her first step in the Aromatherapy education from Casaroma Wellness Centre in Dartmouth, N.S. and encourage her to learn more about traditional medicines passed down from her ancestors. Cheyenne earned her Bachelor of Science (Agr.) in Plant Science from Dalhousie Agricultural Campus in Truro during 2019 where she showed special interest in aromatic plants and botanical medicine.

Recently, she has been a returning guest speaker for the Seedy Saturday event held in Truro where she talks about Healing with Traditional Plants. In her spare time, Cheyenne enjoys taking medicine and herb walks with her mentors and volunteering with Canada’s national parks where she has worked with the endangered Blanding’s turtle and the Bring Back the Boreal project, planting seedlings along the Skyline trail. She is also a past volunteer of the Hope for Wildlife Organization where she assisted in animal rescues and learned experience with wildlife handling, dedicating a lot of her time to environmental sustainability and being guided by the principle of Netukulimk.
