Harvest Blocks Open for Comment - April 22

As of April 23rd, we have new harvest blocks available for comment on the province’s Harvest Plan Map Viewer (HPMV). They will be open until Tuesday, May 2, and we encourage our members and the community to provide feedback. If you’re not sure where to find our license area in the viewer, we are located in Annapolis County, nestled between the Medway Lakes Protected Area, the Tobeatic Wilderness Area, and Kejimkujik National Park and Historic Site.

We’d prefer if you provided comments directly through the viewer; however, you can also contact us via email.

The next step for MCFC regarding these areas will be to complete site planning for each harvest by completing a Pre-Treatment Assessment (PTA) to determine the appropriate harvest prescription. During a PTA, we will assess timber volume and stand characteristics, and complete a Forest Ecosystem Classification to determine the vegetation and soil types present. All of this information collectively helps inform a restorative harvest approach that matches the current state of the stand with desired ecological outcomes that help restore key features and functions like increasing the percentage of late successional and climate adaptive species present, improving the growth and quality development of the timber resources and improving structural diversity to simplified, even-aged forests.

The areas shown on the HPMV have not yet had detailed site plans completed, and this represents a shift in the process from previous postings for public comment. Posting harvest plans for public comment is one step in our management process, and public feedback, along with our additional planning steps described below, will influence the final plans for each site. Once we have completed the final planning stages for these sites, we will repost them on our website for additional feedback. Stay tuned for more updates as the planning process unfolds.
