HEMLOCK HERO
VOLUNTEER & TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES
Volunteer to Help Nova Scotia’s Hemlock Forests
Do you love being in the woods? Want to take action for Nova Scotia’s forests? Join our Hemlock Hero team and help protect some of the province’s old-growth Eastern Hemlocks stands.
These iconic trees are under serious threat from an invasive insect called Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA). While we can’t save every tree, with your help, we can protect some of the most important stands and give these forests a fighting chance.
As a Hemlock Hero, you’ll be part of a dedicated team working to slow the spread of HWA and support hemlock conservation efforts across Nova Scotia. Volunteering gives you a chance to explore remote, old-growth forests—beautiful places that few people ever get to see. Whether you're looking to learn new skills or just spend more time in the woods, there's a place for you in this growing community of forest stewards.
How You Can Help:
☀️Attend a Training Session
Learn how to identify HWA and treat Eastern Hemlock trees and become part of our volunteer team through Hemlock Hero Training. Offered three times each year in May and June, these sessions provide everything you need to get started safely and confidently in the field.
🌲 Join Treatment Days
Join our Hemlock Conservation crew in the woods as we treat infested hemlocks using stem injection and basal bark spray techniques. Treatment days run from May to November, with lots of chances to get involved.
Note: Hemlock Hero training is required to participate in treatment activities.
❄️ Help with Tree-Marking
If you'd rather start with a lighter commitment, join us for tree-marking days - a key step that helps prioritize trees for treatment. Tree-marking days run from December to April and are open to everyone (no training required).
Volunteer Details & Sign up Information
Hemlock Hero Volunteer Day
Have you completed Hemlock Hero training and want to put your new skills to use?
This month, we’re inviting all trained Hemlock Heroes to join us for July weekdays to help treat Nova Scotia’s old-growth Eastern Hemlocks.
🌿Sign up for one (or more!) of the following dates to join us for the adventure!🌿
🌲Tuesday, July 15th
🌲Wednesday, July 16th
🌲Tuesday, July 29th
🌲Wednesday, July 30th
If you’ve completed Hemlock Hero training, volunteer days are a great way to stay involved, build your skills, and take direct action against Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA). Each week, we head into the forest to treat or mark infested trees, contributing directly to long-term forest conservation goals.
What to Expect:
We’ll start the day at our Hemlock Conservation Office with a morning briefing that covers safety protocols, contingency planning, hazard assessments, and a weather check. You’ll also get a site overview and be outfitted with all the PPE and navigation tools you’ll need for the day. Then we’ll head into the field, working in small teams to carry out treatment activities based on the day’s weather conditions.
And don’t worry, you won’t be out there alone! We use the buddy system, so you’ll always have someone from the team with you to help navigate and ensure safety and support throughout the day.
Depending on weather conditions, we’ll focus on one of the following activities:
Basal Bark Application: Low winds & no rain
Stem Injection: moderate winds or light rain
Tree Marking: moderate winds & moderate rain
* Note: Volunteer days may be cancelled during periods of high winds or heavy rain.
To participate in volunteer days, you must have completed Hemlock Hero training with MCFC. If you haven’t taken our training but believe you have equivalent experience, such as holding a valid pesticide applicator’s license and having hands-on treatment experience, or having received thorough training through another organization, please email the Hemlock Conservation Coordinator before signing up to explain your background and request approval to join.

Tree Marking Volunteer Day
Join Us for a Volunteer Day to Mark Hemlock Trees!
Join us for an adventure to protect old-growth hemlock trees from the invasive Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA). This hands-on tree-marking event offers an opportunity to help prepare the hemlock trees for 2025 treatment. The day begins with a thorough safety orientation covering navigation techniques and emergency protocols. From there, we’ll take you to a hemlock forest site, where you'll receive guidance in the field and get introduced to the tools and skills needed for effective tree-marking.
What to Expect:
🌲 Tree-Marking Activities: Get hands-on experience assessing tree health, measuring tree diameters (DBH), marking trees with flagging tape, tagging them, and recording information for our data base.
🤝 Community Connection: Join others who share an interest in conservation and back country navigation.
🌿 Explore Nature’s Wonders: Enjoy the breathtaking beauty of protected old-growth forests, pristine wilderness, and majestic towering hemlocks.
Who Can Join:
This event welcomes all Hemlock Heroes, their friends, and anyone eager to support hemlock conservation efforts. Whether you’re a seasoned tree-marker or new to the field, there’s a place for everyone. The activities involve hiking, navigating uneven terrain in isolated areas and working at a steady pace, so participants should be comfortable spending extended time outdoors.
What to Bring:

💧 Water: Bring 2–4 liters of water and a thermos with your favorite hot beverage.
🍴 Food: Pack a lunch and snacks.
Additional Information:
Registered participants will receive an email two days before the event with essential updates, including the exact location, weather forecast, and other important details.

Volunteer Hemlock Hero Treatment Day
Join us for a day of volunteering to conserve old-growth hemlock trees!
Get ready for an exciting adventure in the woods as we work together to protect our hemlock trees from the invasive Hemlock Wooly Adelgid (HWA)! Meet the passionate Strike Team at the Hemlock Conservation office in Caledonia, where we'll have a brief safety overview and kick off the day with transportation to one of our beautiful forest sites.
What to Expect:
Firsthand Conservation experience: Experience using basal bark spraying methods to treat hemlock trees. If the weather has other plans, we will switch to stem injection techniques or mark areas for future treatment.
Community Building: Connect with fellow nature enthusiasts and enjoy the camaraderie of working together to make a real difference.
Explore remote old-growth Forests: Embrace the challenge of navigating scenic, yet rugged terrain. This is your chance to get off the beaten path and be a hero for our hemlock trees!
Who Can Join:
Hemlock Heroes: All volunteers need to have Hemlock Hero training. This ensures everyone is ready for the physically demanding tasks and safe pesticide use.
What to Bring:
Water: Pack 3 - 4 Litres (or more!) of water to keep hydrated.
Food: Bring a packed lunch and plenty of snacks to keep you fueled up for the day.
Outdoor Wear: Wear appropriate clothing for a forest setting (long sleeve shirt, long pants, sturdy footwear, and a bug net/bug spray).
