Get ready for the treatment season with our Hemlock Hero Training Course!

We’re kicking off the season with Saturday training sessions to get everyone field-ready for the year ahead.
🌿 Mark your calendars and sign up before spots fill up! 🌿

🌲Saturday, May 24th
🌲Saturday, June 7th
🌲Saturday, June 21st

Are you ready to take action to protect Nova Scotia’s hemlock forests? Join our Hemlock Hero volunteer team and help us combat Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) through hands-on conservation work. Before joining us for treatment days, all volunteers must attend a Hemlock Hero training course to ensure you’re confident, safe, and well-prepared in the field. The day includes a morning classroom session followed by hands-on fieldwork in the afternoon.

During the training, you'll learn:

  • An introduction to our Hemlock Conservation program, Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA), and the ecological value of hemlock forests.

  • Pesticide safety requirements, including product labels, provincial regulations, and proper PPE use.

  • Safety protocols, first aid, contingency planning, changing weather, and hazard assessments.

  • How to work safely as part of a treatment team—communication, roles, and buddy systems.

  • How to navigate sites using field maps, and prepare for terrain challenges.

  • How to identify and mark healthy, infested, and high-priority trees for treatment.

  • Best practices for working near streams, wetlands, and watercourses—with awareness of buffer zones, sensitive habitats, and non-target species.

  • Step-by-step guidance on treating hemlocks using different pesticides and equipment (e.g., injectors, sprayers).

No prior experience is needed—just a willingness to learn and a passion for protecting our forests.

🌲 Sign up to reserve your spot in an upcoming training course and take your first step toward becoming a Hemlock Hero!🌲
