This year, we’re inviting all trained Hemlock Heroes to join us for Treatment Tuesdays and help treat Nova Scotia’s old-growth Eastern Hemlocks.

If you’ve completed Hemlock Hero training, Treatment Tuesdays are a great way to stay involved, build your skills, and take direct action against Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA). Each week, we head into the forest to treat infested trees, contributing directly to long-term forest conservation efforts.
What to Expect:
We’ll start the day at our Hemlock Conservation Office with a morning briefing that covers safety protocols, contingency planning, hazard assessments, and a weather check. You’ll also get a site overview and be outfitted with all the PPE and navigation tools you’ll need for the day. Then we’ll head into the field, working in small teams to carry out treatment activities based on the day’s weather conditions.
And don’t worry—you won’t be out there alone! We use the buddy system, so you’ll always have someone from the team with you to help navigate and ensure safety and support throughout the day.
Depending on weather conditions, we’ll focus on one of the following activities:
Low winds & no rain: Basal bark spraying
Moderate winds or light rain: Stem injection
Moderate winds & moderate rain: Tree marking
High winds or heavy rain: The field day will be cancelled for safety reasons
To participate in treatment days, you must have completed Hemlock Hero training with MCFC. If you haven’t taken our training but believe you have equivalent experience—such as holding a valid pesticide applicator’s license and having hands-on treatment experience, or receiving thorough training from another organization—please email the Hemlock Conservation Coordinator before signing up to explain your background and request approval to join.
